Equal Pay for All: An Idea Whose Time Has Not, and Will Not, Comeis. Second, the proposal would be regarded as unjust by almost everyone. The empirical work on justice makes this plain. Equal pay for equal work is desirable; equal pay . is something else entirely. It is an idea not likely to find adherents.

More Onerous Work Deserves Higher Payhat Friedman’s luck challenge to desert can be resisted. In particular, it seems to us that one particular conception of desert can plausibly justify unequal pay: compensatory desert. Salaries should compensate workers for the relative reduction of welfare opportunities compared to other types of work that exist in society.

Although incentives can be realized in many forms, it is argued that the incentives rooted in pay are the most pragmatic and realistic ones.
