Abelian Categories,Most categories used in the context of ring theory are abelian categories, i.e. they are preadditive and one can define kernels, images etc. of their morphisms in such a way that these notions may be handled, on the whole, as in the theory of modules. In this chapter we develop the basic concepts of additive category theory.
