Blue Histories: Thinking with Sadness in the Middle Ages,exhibits sadness as a way of living. I’ll describe how I use these poems to talk about anxiety/depression in the classroom, and how medieval literature might fit within a disability studies framework (drawing on the writing of disability scholars Margaret Price and Eli Clare).

Feeling Unproductive: Vivek Shraya on the Creative Labor of Negative Affect,r’s affectivity: the expression of queer BIPOC trauma is stigmatized while its consumption is commercialized. This discussion resists the hegemonic reproduction of marginalized peoples’ trauma by calling for a rejection of the demand on them to ‘trauma clown’, and by embracing the ‘unproductive’ dimensions of affect.

Bird Says the Sound of Rewind,oethnography with the imagery of a late ‘90s ornithology guide published by National Geographic. “Bird Says” overlays the depressive dissociation that is attendant to a newly ailing body with a series of sublime distances between the lyric speaker, his childhood geographies and his disintegrating communities.

Not Down but Different: Depression in the Shadow of the Black Dog, crime of visibility, a social and political crime. What then must we make of the person of color who is depressed by racism? This essay attempts to link depression and race in the experience of Asian Americans, who suffer in disproportionate numbers despite their “model minority” stereotype.
