In the United States, an estimated 13,600 new cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed in 1980, about 4.5% of the 300,000 total cases of skin cancer [1]. At the City of Hope National Medical Center, over a period of 13 years, we have seen 7 melanomas of mucosal sites compared to 469 melanomas of cutaneous or ocular origin (1.5%).
