NASA was using it in the construction of space vehicles in 1968, when it was adopted by the US Army Natick Laboratories to assure the safety of the astronauts’ food (.; .). Pillsbury applied it in the formulation of the first rations and documented it in the first HACCP publications (.; .).

For example, a meat frankfurter containing fat in excess of the government standard could be considered adulterated, but it is not unsafe. If a product is adulterated, it most likely is also misbranded.
