The Symmetric Capillary Tube,d for over 150 years. Only recently was it shown that methods already known to Laplace could be developed to obtain significantly more precise information. We describe some of those developments in this chapter. These new results have served in turn as the underlying basis for recent studies on sessile drops, that are described in Chapter 3.

Asymmetric Case; Comparison Principles and Applications,tatement we give is formally analogous to the familiar maximum principle for the Laplace operator; however there is an important new feature, which reflects itself in some striking distinctions, between the behavior of capillary surfaces and that of surfaces determined by the solutions of linear elliptic equations.
