Manfred Bornhofen,Martin C. Bornhofens and ECT generally increase adrenergic activity and decrease cholinergic activity. Conversely, two effective antimanic agents, reserpine and haloperidol, increase cholinergic activity, and drugs which cause depression, such as reserpine and propranolol, have cholinergic, as well as antiadrenergic properties.

Manfred Bornhofen,Martin C. Bornhofennover of both substrates and their product ACh. In human autopsy material the cholinergic brain enzymes and receptors are the only substances that can be measured reliably. Hence, this review will concentrate on these enzymes in schizophrenia.

Manfred Bornhofen,Martin C. Bornhofench interconnections could be mediated by the growth of new synapses, alteration in electrophysiological properties at the synapse, or systematic change in pharmacological synaptic sensitivity. Its lability makes the synapse a plausible target for investigations into the substrates of memory.
