The molecular mechanism of dopamine-induced apoptosis: identification and characterization of genes The current major hypothesis suggests that nigral neuronal death in PD is due to excessive oxidative stress generated by auto-and enzymatic oxidation of the endogenous neurotransmitter dopamine (DA), the formation of neuromelanin and presence of high concentrations of iron.

,Monitoring neuroprotection and restorative therapies in Parkinson’s disease with PET, PET findings in transplantation trials involving implantation of human and procine fetal mesencephalic tissue is presented. It is concluded that functional imaging provides a valuable adjunct to clinical assessment when judging the efficacy of neuroprotective and restorative approaches to PD.

Homocysteine and alcoholism,hermore, it has been found that homocysteine induces neuronal cell damage bytimulating NMDA receptors as well as by producing free radicals. Homocysteine neurotoxicity via overstimulation of N- ethyl-D-aspartate receptors may contribute to the pathogenesis of both brain shrinkage and withdrawal seizures linked to alcoholism.
