Secondary successions,ecies other than those previously present commonly establish and occupy the gaps. If, as frequently happens, the invaders comprise species showing wide variations in longevity, pronounced changes will occur in the composition of the vegetation as shortlived species die, and the new gaps are re-occupied, while longer-lived species remain.
