Adhesion of leukocytes from flow: The selectins and their ligands,ls range from 1 to 10 mm/s, allowing for blood transit times on the order of 0.1 to 0.01 s for a 100 μm segment of venule. This time interval is too short to ensure activation and attachment of leukocytes suspended in the flowing blood.

Molecular probes to these might be clinically useful for imaging inflammation and provide more readily interpretable information than that supplied by existing techniques [4].
