Interpretation of Vacuum Microbalance Data Obtained During the High-Temperature Oxidation of Materi analysis and kinetic theory in the planning and interpretation of microbalance studies. Studies on the oxidation of silicon, chromium, and molybdenum are discussed. It is concluded that detailed thermochemical analyses must be used in planning the work and in interpreting the experimental data.

An Automated Bakeable Quartz Fiber Vacuum Ultramicrobalance,ts special housing are described. Automatic operation is accomplished with flags mounted on the hangdown suspensions, two photocells, magnetic compensation, and the appropriate electronics. Causes of instabilities encountered in high vacuum with the automatic system are discussed and the methods used to eliminate the problems are given.

Momentum Artifacts in the Gravimetric Measurement of Rapid Desorption,se of the balance are solved and compared with propane desorption from activated charcoal, a system which exhibits a marked momentum error. It is shown that the artifact can be eliminated experimentally by using a wire mesh support pan and an appropriate amount of sorbent placed in the bottom of a tare hangdown tube to null out molecular drag.
