The Classification of L Dwarfse reasoning behind the choice of letters “L” and “T” is also given. Our philosophy of spectral classification is explained and we use this philosophy to construct an L dwarf typing scheme. The scheme, originally developed on only 25 spectra, has now been shown to work successfully on a sample of 92 L dwarfs.

I discuss three of these from an observational viewpoint — the temperature scale for L dwarfs, the role of the alkali elements, and the liely “weather” in brown dwarf atmospheres.

We also assess the potential of GSC-II for research on the new ultracool L and T dwarfs.

Introduction: The Spectral Types of the Ultracool DwarfsThe proposed L and T spectral classes to classify Ultra-Cool Dwarfs are well defined and extend the K and M sequence of the MK system to lower temperatures. They can be understood as a single temperature sequence by including dust condensation and segregation in addition to ionization and dissociation that underlies the MK system.
