描述Hierarchical design methods were originally introduced for thedesign of digital ICs, and they appeared to provide for significantadvances in design productivity, Time-to-Market, and first-time rightdesign. These concepts have gained increasing importance in thesemiconductor industry in recent years. In the course of time, thesupportive quality of hierarchical methods and their advantages wereconfirmed. .System Level Hardware/Software Co-design: An IndustrialApproach. demonstrates the applicability of hierarchical methods tohardware / software codesign, and mixed analogue / digital designfollowing a similar approach. .Hierarchical design methods provide for high levels of design support,both in a qualitative and a quantitative sense. In the qualitativesense, the presented methods support all phases in the product lifecycle of electronic products, ranging from requirements analysis toapplication support. Hierarchical methods furthermore allow forefficient digital hardware design, hardware / software codesign, andmixed analogue / digital design, on the basis of commerciallyavailable formalisms and design tools.
