An hypothesis for the role of malic enzyme in symbiotic nitrogen fixation in soybean nodules,dy-state conditions, have shown that while addition of malate stimulated respiration, the effect on N. fixation depended on the concentration of malate and oxygen. At low malate concentrations, N. fixation was stimulated, but at higher malate concentrations (more than 0.5 m. at less than 60 n. O.) N

Mechanism of osmotically regulated N-acetylglutaminylglutamine amide production in ,,that NAGGN may be partly responsible for the osmotic tolerance observed in .. 36% of mutants that were characterized as osmotically sensitive compared to the parent strain, were also found to contain reduced levels of NAGGN.
