The Palomar Supernova Search a rapid increase in the rate of discovery; a particularly notable event was Zwicky’s discovery of the SN 1937c in IC 4182 which led to Baade and Minkowski’s delineation of the evolution of the spectrum and light curve characteristic of a type I supernova.

Review of the Research on Supernovaeuction of a new Astrophysical Observatory and Laboratory, to be conducted in close cooperation with the Mount Wilson Observatory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. No satisfactory theory thas yet been proposed for the origin of this energy reservoir and since some young SNR already exhibit many diverse properties, it is even doubtful whether one unique theory exists or should be looked for.

Historical Observations of Supernovae it is desirable to make the best use that we can of such data. Apart from the fact that the identification of a SNR with a historically observed supernova draws special attention to the remnant, leading to its more detailed investigation, historical observations of supernovae are important for a number of reasons.

Observations of the 1968 Type II Supernova in NGC 5236 visual discovery on July 16 by Pretoria amateur J. C. Bennett in the course of his search for comets. It is found to be typical of type II, although its site, superimposed on the nucleus of the galaxy, is unusual and in marked contrast to the three previous events which occurred far out in the spiral arm structure (Karpowicz and Rudnicki, 1968).
