Introduction,In the shape of a text–atlas, this is an overview of the pathology of sudden death in the young and in the athletes, summing up the experience we gathered in the perspective study carried out in the Veneto Region, northeast of Italy.

Coronary Artery Disease,Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is mostly ascribable to coronary artery disease and is due to a large spectrum of both congenital and acquired morbid entities [1–3]. Premature coronary atherosclerosis is ranking first even in young age, with peculiar features of an accelerated proliferative phenomenon [2, 4].

Cardiomyopathies,An abrupt electrical turmoil precipitating ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest is a frequent complication of cardiomyopathies, whether overt or concealed, since they present an arrhythmogenic substrate.

Myocarditis,Acute inflammation of the myocardium is another major cause of SCD in the young, particularly in children and adolescents [1–13]. The mechanism is mostly arrhythmic, since the affected young usually die without previous signs or symptoms and often during exercise performance.
