描述Over the past decade the study of the formation and properties of interstellar grains has assumed a growing importance, going much beyond what might have been guessed only a few years ago. It has come to be understood that grains playa role in processes other than the simple absorption and scattering of starlight, which was all that the astronomers of a generation aga considered to be their relevance. Grains indeed playa critical role in controlling the temperature, composition, and states of aggregation of the whole interstellar medium. Among the still mysterious problems is the origin of the vast clouds of obscuring material that is observed in radiogalaxies like NGC 5128 and M 82, which may weIl be associated with the explosions of very massive objects. It is safe to say that from this growing field of study much still remains to be dis- covered. The topics discussed in this volume will make clear to the reader the range and versatility of the subjects. F. Features of the Interstellar Extinction Curveμm absorption bands of small silicate spheroids upon their shape and alignment has been studied. It is found that the bands can be displaced by ~ 1 μm towards longer wavelengths from their positions for corresponding spheres : and that a further, though small, displacement can be superimposed upon this by their subsequent alignment.

Interstellar Extinction and Diffuse Absorption Features.. and .. with .. resp. .. are, however, rather weak. Correlations between .. and .. and between .. and .. are indicated..The results have been qualitatively interpreted in favour of the dust model consisting of a mixture of small silicate grains and larger silicate grains coated by molecular mantles.

Diffuse Band Extinction and Polarization in Core-Mantle Grainse only apparent possibility for producing symmetric band shapes in the dust grains is in the very small bare particles in interstellar space which, if they are aligned and produce the λ 2200 band, must exhibit a strong polarization effect in this region.

Formation and Flow of Dust Grains in Cool Stellar Atmosphereslead to fairly large (~0.1 μ), scattering silicate grains. An instability is suggested for cool M giants and supergiants, which leads to a patchy distribution of surface temperature (grains in cool patches, high flux in warm patches).

Thermal Emission Spectra of Silicates from Planetary Nebulae nevertheless, necessary to fit correctly the experimental results. It appears from the calculations that, for each object, it is possible to define theoretically the most probable nature of the emitting dust.

On the Presence of Phyllosilicate Minerals in the Interstellar Grainsterstellar absorption band near 9.8 μ. Laboratory spectra of several phyllosilicates give better agreement as does the spectrum of a carbonaceous chondrite. We propose that the silicates in the interstellar grains are predominantly phyllosilicates and suggest additional spectral tests for this hypothesis.

Diffuse Interstellar Band Formation in Dense Clouds decreases systematically with increasing grain size. It is concluded that the diffuse bands are not formed in the mantles which accrete on the grains in interstellar clouds, but that they could be produced in the cores of grains or in some molecular species.
