The Evolution of Social Informatics,As we argued earlier, the most influential version of SI emerged in the U.S. Out of the six early versions, this version of SI has had a different trajectory, and has transcended national boundaries and achieved global reach. It is this version of SI that is the focus of this and the following chapters.

Principles, refer to the motivations and labels that scholars have used during each stage to describe their scholarly work. Some labels and motives have had a long-lasting impact on SI research throughout these stages while others did not last beyond one particular stage. Notable developments in the principles of SI are presented in Figure 4.1.
