Hugh Blackburn (1823 to 1909)Hugh Blackburn, seen here in caricature, was Professor of Mathematics at Glasgow University for thirty years from 1849 to 1879. Whilst an undergraduate at Cambridge he designed a form of double pendulum, described in section below, which bears his name. This device was used to investigate harmonic intervals.
