Modeling in-Pack Chemical Transformations,r assessing the combined effects of acidic deposition and global change on seasonally snow-covered regions of the earth. Also, good models of gas and solute redistribution in snow/ice over a variety of time scales (years to centuries) are needed to help interpret both temperate-region and polar ice cores.

Organic Micropollutants in Seasonal Snowcover and Firn,in polar and alpine glaciers has, to date, received only limited attention. This has been the case despite the much improved temporal resolution possible in glaciers over that of most lake sediments, especially in the polar extremes where lake sedimentation rates tend to be very low.

(2) The determination of removal rates of a species from the atmosphere so that its atmospheric concentration and lifetime can be determined. Links Between Snowpack Physics and Snowpack Chemistry,all, and then by dry deposition. An established snow cover may represent the total chemical load on the environment integrated over several months. It is a widespread observation that this chemical load may be removed from the pack as an ionic pulse, with as much as 80 percent of the solutes eluting with the first 20 percent of the melt.

Chemical Change in Snowpacks,cussion paper is to illustrate a framework on which chemical changes in snowpacks might be discussed. The paper draws on the discussions that took place at the workshop and aims to complement the much more detailed paper by Roger Bales (1991) which deals with the way chemical and compositional changes in snowpacks are modelled.

Influence of Urban Areas on the Chemistry of Regional Snow Cover,lutants is affected by local as well as remote sources. Pollutants are accumulated in the snow cover during cold periods (Suzuki, 1982; Barrie and Vet, 1984), and the chemical study of snow cover can be a useful tool for determining deposition chemistry in urban areas.
