Chinese saline lakes, some halophilic bacteria. The important role of organisms in many processes of geochemical and geological interest is stressed. Geoecology, as a combination of geology, mineral deposition and ecology, is a subject worth greater attention.

Effects of microbial activity on the hydrochemistry and sedimentology of Lake Logipi, Kenya, poorly organic, zeolitic mud that reaches 1.5 m in tickness in the deepest part of the lake. This black layer may be overlaid with thin crusts of trona and halite which prograde over the basin from its southern bank when the lake is drying out and which are dissolved in the lake waters during the rainy season.

Salinity tolerance of the copepod , (Lepeschkin, 1900), a key food chain organism in the Salton Seafor at least 120 days. Copepods maintained at higher salinities, up to 79 g 1., remained alive up to 90 days, but a new generation was not produced. In laboratory studies of larval production and survivorship, few nauplii were released at salinities of 68 g 1. or higher, and none survived to the copepodite stage.

The paper provides a summary review of their major physico-chemical and biological features. Several are threatened by activities in their drainage basins, particularly diversion of inflowing waters.
