A proper fault tolerant framework must be implemented to restrict such error propagation and to provide proper conversation error-recovery mechanisms.

Of particular interest are those areas in which programmable electronic systems play a part in overall safety. The work of sub—project 4 was to be based on those results achieved in the preceeding sub—projects.

Case Study Using the Guidelines Frameworkped a Guidelines Framework for the application of existing Safety Integrity Criteria in a standardised stepwise manner. This paper describes the application of this Guidelines Framework in the limited safety assessment of the programming mode of a robot installation and is intended only to illustrate the use of the Guidelines Framework.
