Parameters, Scales and Geostrophic Balance is not new, except, perhaps, for some aspects of the section on turbulence scales. It is nevertheless useful to recall the fundamental processes. To others working in fluid mechanics but who are not so familiar with rotating fluids, the contents of this paper is a good introduction to what follows in later chapters in this volume.

Barotropic and Baroclinic Instabilitiesrised equations often yield mode-like solutions with time-dependence of the form ..t, where . is time and σ the frequency of the mode. If .(σ. < ., the mode grows exponentially and the flow is said to be linearly unstable.

Two-Dimensional Barotropic and Baroclinic Vorticestructures. Two dimensional vortex dynamics in barotropic fluid is also a key problem in free shear flows with or without rotation. In this case, the main question is connected with the stability of these vortices to three-dimensional disturbances.

Concepts and Examples of Rotating Fluidsr depth H is much less than L so that only the component of Q perpendicular to the planets surface needs to be considered. The Boussinesq approximation has also only limited validity in AFD. All the lectures in this course use approximations current in GFD when problems of geophysical interest are considered.

Vorticity, Potential Vorticity arc not discussed. The dynamics of point vortices (Aref . [4]) is also not treated in this volume. An advanced account of the dynamics of vortex filament dynamics is given in this volume by Moore [5].
