Convection, Spontaneous Discontinuities, and Stellar Winds and X-Ray Emission,e models are the first scientific representation of the static equilibrium of a self-gravitating star. The polytropes are not precise models of a star, but they capture the basic theoretical principles of the balance of thermal pressure against gravity, with a high central temperature declining toward the surface.
