The chemical industry in the United States, as well as in many other parts of the world, is being challenged on many fronts, old and new, due to global competitive, environmental, governmental, political, and technological trends that seem more variable than ever before. The case of resorcinol mirrors this array of challenges and demonstrates the broad range of successes and some of the problems of the industry. It is shown how a sprout of a chemical grew over time into a sizable, still growing item of co~erce. Processes for Making Resorcinol,At present, only the benzene sulfonation/fusion and the hydroperoxidation/cleavage of diisopropylbenzene routes are used commercially on a large scale. The remainder of the routes described below are used on a small scale only, if at all.

The Use of Resorcinol in Rubber Compositions,tions is the major commercial application of resorcinol. For this reason, this use is a separate topic here. Other uses of resorcinol resins are discussed in Chapter 5, and the many uses of resorcinol/derivatives as additives for other polymeric compositions and organic materials are presented in Chapter 11.
