The Discourse of National Identity among Victorian Travellers,versally thought of and referred to as ‘English’. As noted above, this use of ‘English’ was no doubt a result of Europeans Identifying the English — rather than British — language spoken by travellers from Britain. They often referred to American travellers as ‘English’ for the same reason.
