描述By their adoption of Agenda 21, most of the world‘s governmentshave acknowledged the need for sustainable development. This impliesthat new policies are needed, focusing on economic, social, culturaland ecological goals. At the same time, we also need to solve existingenvironmental and social problems, and prevent the occurrence of newones. This volume presents, tests and illustrates a theoreticallywell-founded procedure for discovering regional opportunities forsustainable development, based on a systems approach to decisionmaking. The procedure takes as its starting point the needs of thepeople involved, relating these to the measurement of availableresources in order to find opportunities for multiple resource use andsustainable development. The needs of future generations and broadercommunities are taken into account throughout. .The book studies regional planning and the implementation of plans,offering guidance and support to parties involved in debates onsustainable development, and improving the quality of their decisionmaking.

Procedure for Sustainable Development: Decision Making Phases and Information Requirementsformation on the opportunities for sustainable development. This procedure follows directly from the strategy proposed in Chapter II for the search for sustainable development, and integrates the concepts developed in Chapters II–V. The essential issues discussed and the steps proposed there will be summarized.

Introduction: Opportunities for Multiple Land-Use in Rural Areasfind improvements to the proposed procedure. All decisions were made by researchers. For this reason, the decisions on the information-gathering procedure were not embedded in an external decision making process.
