But it does not usually consist of thematizing the letters, as might happen in proofreading. This chapter investigates various types of perception which an engagement with writing can involve, concentrating on visual perception.

The concluding sections examine memorization, forgetting and a reader’s ‘systematic’ exploration of their motivating associations, e.g., for academic purposes.
