Technique,The orohypopharynx and esophagus are not ordinarily visualized on the plain film radiographic examinations except where they are outlined by normally contained air. In order to delineate these structures effectively, an opaque contrast medium (usually liquid) is employed. Most commonly, a barium sulfate mixture is utilized (the barium swallow).

Organic Lesions (Local),Acute inflammatory involvement of the oropharynx and esophagus is relatively common. Many causes exist. An inflammatory process may go unrecognized both clinically and even radiologically. The radiologic findings concerning systematic causes are described in Chapter 6. Inflammatory changes due to local causes are now considered.
