The History of Radar Studies of the Clear Atmospherewas always intriguing, and as the explanations of the echoes became accepted, a rapid rush of scientific results arose as new radar systems were applied to studies of atmospheric structure and dynamics.

The first photographs of lightning echoes were made in 1949, using a 10-cm wavelength radar at MIT (Ligda, 1950).
