The Calendars,The patterns of the Sun, the Moon, and the stars provided the basis for ancient calendars. Since the Sun, the Moon, and the stars have different cycles, the rules of calendar are not trivial. Different cultures have used different approaches to develop different forms of calendar to meet the practical needs of the people.

Size of the Earth,Using a simple instrument and geometric arguments, the Greek astronomer Eratosthenes was able to determine the size of the Earth quite accurately. By observing the Moon, Aristarchus was able to put a lower limit to the distance between the Earth and the Sun. These were powerful illustrations of the intellectual ability of human beings.

Journey of the Sun Among the Stars,Over the course of a year, the Sun goes around the 12 zodiac constellations along the ecliptic. Curiously, the path of the ecliptic is inclined at an angle with respect to the celestial equator. This inclination gives us the seasons.
