Tidal currents of the continental shelf,coast of the British Isles, are dominated by tides. Even in areas of small tidal range strong local tidal currents can occur, either near to a ‘node’ in a stationary tidal oscillation (Section 2.3) or because of bathymetry, particularly in channels or straits connecting two regions — for instance the Strait of Messina in the Mediterranean.
