Basics of Magnetism, discussion of this chapter is focused on magnetism of insulators. An introduction to magnetism of metals will be given separately in the next chapter. For a more extensive introduction to magnetism, see, for instance, Refs. [1.1,1.6, 2.1–2.13].

Linear Responses of Metallic Electrons,amely, the elastic constant, we discuss it later in Chapters 5 and 7. We will be particularly interested in the responses in the ferromagnetic state of a metal. The results of this chapter may be useful by themselves but they are also essential in our later discussions on the electron-phonon interaction which is the central theme of this book.
