Tethys — the evolution of an ideahic conception, “Tethys” and “Tethyan” are currently used with different meanings in tectonics and paleo-biogeography. In paleobiogeography, Tethys is understood as a realm with varying extension. This dynamic conception is in contrast to the conception of the stable Cretaceous Mesogée by . (1900).

Early and Mid-Cretaceous Tethyan assemblages are situated within a broad equatorial belt about 40° N to S. During the Late Cretaceous nannofossil bioprovincialism increases resulting in the existence of typical Tethyan/tropical, subtropical and high-latitude nannofossil species.
