EvaporationOne of the main goals of the International Hydrological Decade programme was the determination of the water and heat balance of the lake with .particular emphasis on the exact estimation of evaporation. For this purpose a number of meteorological stations were set up in the lake region (Fig. 6.1)..

It is of some interest that between the crystalline and the Pannonian cover, sediments of the earlier stages of the Paratethys (brackish Sarmatian and marine Badenian) are lacking, although they are present further west and east of the lake area. Their absence is thought to be due to the shallowness of the earlier stages within this area.

Water balancethe other lakes of Austria. A natural input of water via small gulleys is either lacking or only poorly developed. The terrain is so flat that a difference in elevation of only 10 cm can be of greater consquence here than a difference of 100 m in a mountainous district.
