描述Aggression is a highly conserved behavioral adaptation that evolved to help org- isms compete for limited resources and thereby ensure their survival. However, in modern societies where resources such as food, shelter, etc. are not limiting, aggr- sion has become a major cultural problem worldwide presumably because of its deep seeded roots in the neuronal circuits and neurochemical pathways of the human brain. In Neurobiology of Aggression: Understanding and Preventing Violence, leading experts in the fields of the neurobiology, neurochemistry, genetics, and behavioral and cultural aspects of aggression and violence provide a comprehensive collection of review articles on one of the most important cross-disciplinary issues of our time. Rather than summarize the topics covered by each author in each chapter, I present a schematic diagram to guide the reader in thinking about different aspects of aggr- sive and violent behavior from its neurobiological roots to environmental factors that can either promote or prevent aggression to visions of some of the most horrific acts of violence of our times, and then towards the development of strategies to reduce aggressive behavior and preve

The Serotonergic Dimension of Aggression and Violence, aggressive behavior) seek to determine the neurobehavioral factors that underlie violence or other destructive behaviors in humans. Behavioral, imaging, pharmacologic, and genetic studies indicate that anatomically and functionally distinct neural circuits, as well as numerous neurotransmitters, gr

The Neurochemical Genetics of Serotonin in Aggression, Impulsivity, and Suicide, Mann, 2000). Data increasingly indicate that the level of serotonergic transmission dictates behavior and not .. A serotonergic abnormality may underlie the aggression-impulsivity and may be the diathesis for suicidal behavior. The serotonergic abnormality can be anatomically restricted to a discre

Neuroendocrine Stress Responses and Aggression, and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis (Fig. 1). Both systems have a relatively intense basal activity, which shows ultradian, diurnal, and seasonal variations. However, more then a 10-fold increase in their activity is noted after challenges of various kinds. Collectively, these s

Y Chromosome and Antisocial Behavior,e special interest shared by neurobiology and ethology for the initiation of aggressive behavior by males. Very soon, the Y chromosome was recognized as being specific to males. As it was, also, highly conserved across the species, the higher incidence of aggressive behavior in males was considered

Aggression in Psychiatric Disorders, prevailing stereotype throughout the 1980s and early 1990s was that patients with psychiatric disorders were more likely to be aggressive, despite the scientific evidence concluding otherwise. As a result of more recent epidemiological studies and reviews, it is now accepted by the scientific commun

Environmental Factors and Aggression in Nonhuman Primates,ls that live in complex societies in which aggression plays important roles. Unlike the favorite laboratory animals, rats and mice, which live in a nocturnal, underground world, primates are generally diurnal and readily observable in the wild.
