描述Australia and New Zealand boast an active community of scholars working in the field of history, philosophy and social studies of science. ‘Australasian Studies in History and Philosophy of Science‘ aims to provide a distinctive publication outlet for their work. Each volume comprises a group of essays on a connected theme, edited by an Australian or a New Zealander with special expertise in that particular area. In each volume, a majority of the contributors is from Australia or New Zealand. CQntributions from elsewhere are by no means ruled out, however, and are indeed actively encouraged wherever appropriate to the balance of the volume in question. Earlier volumes in the series have been welcomed for significantly advancing the discussion of the topics they have dealt with. The present volume will I believe be greeted equally enthusiastically by readers in many parts of the world. R. W. Natural Kinds and Natural Kind Reasoning,ry of natural kinds adequate to reflect these concerns, to investigate the logic of natural kinds, and to elaborate a theory of natural kind reasoning. This essay attempts to make a start on this project.

Indifference and Induction,n as to which box it is in, the only reasonable distribution of degrees of confidence, is a uniform one of 1/3 to each possibility. It is the purpose of this paper to consider what might be offered by way of a rationale for the principle and how two objections to the principle might be handled.

Comments on Thomason,t may well be in our own grasp of the argument. Yet in making this very point, Thomason is already defending one of Feyerabend’s favourite claims — the reasoning processes used by great scientists are remarkably untidy and do not readily compress themselves into neat philosophic formulation.

Instrumental Theories: Possibilities and Space and Time,ry and all its ontological implications are to be taken seriously. If what seems to be a truth preserving theory implies the existence of atoms and electrons, then we should believe in atoms and electrons, says the realist. If we do not believe in the existential entailments of a theory, then the theory should be discarded.
