(a translationof a work published in 1981 in Italian - the bibliography has beenupdated) gives a comprehensive description of the various forms andapproaches in the literature of the history of philosophy from thefifteenth to the middle of the seventeenth century. Several traditionsare described, from the well known `prisca theologia‘ and `perennisphilosophia‘ traditions of Marsilio Ficino and Augustino Steuco, whichclaimed that the Greeks got their philosophy from the East, to theunknown influence of Scepticism on the history of philosophy by therecovery of Sextus Empiricus, and the German Protestant criticalattack on Greek philosophy as Atheistic which was the tradition of thehistory of philosophy out of which Leibniz developed. Each individualhistorian of philosophy is given a separate entry which includes abiography, a complete bibliography of his works, a description of hishistory of philosophy and ends with both an assessment of hisreputation during his own time and a complete listing of recentliterature on him.
