Preclinical Safety Evaluation,In this chapter we provide an overview of the key issues for the preclinical development of microbicides, and describe the purpose of each of the tests along with the key considerations to be taken into account when designing the individual safety studies as well as the overall preclinical program.

Clinical Safety and Pharmacology Trial,ay have different mechanisms of action than early candidates. Given this, drug-specific modifications for early clinical assessment will need to be considered. These emerging issues associated with early clinical trials of microbicides will be reviewed, along with recommendations for future clinical safety and PK/PD evaluation.
