Profile Wall Methods,If plant roots are excavated from the soil it is in most cases sufficient to expose only one part of the whole root system. Such partial excavations as the sector methods (Sect. 3.3.4) can be modified by removing only few centimeters of soil from a profile wall and be used to record the exposed roots.

Glass Wall Methods,Abstract In glass wall methods root growth is observed or recorded through glass windows placed against the soil profile. Sachs (1873) working in boxes with refilled soil was one of the first who used this technique (see Sect. 10.3.3). Root studies in undisturbed soil profiles were made for the first time by McDougall (1916).

Techniques of Root Washing,Roots can be separated from soil with dry sieving only. At the field sampling site, the soil-root samples are thrown on a sloping wire screen with 2–5 mm mesh size where the roots are collected. Fresh or dry weight or other root parameters are then recorded directly without washing.

Auger Methods,d augers or by mechanical sampling machines, and separating the roots from the soil by washing. Except for special purposes no attempt is made to keep the roots in their natural positions. The size of the samples generally is smaller than those from the monolith methods.
