描述.Cultural evolution, much like general evolution, works from the assumption that cultures are descendent from much earlier ancestors. Human culture manifests itself in forms ranging from the small bands of hunters, through intermediate scale complex hunter-gatherers and farmers, to the high density urban settlements and complex polities that characterize much of today’s world...The chapters in the volume examine the dynamic interaction between the micro- and macro-scales of cultural evolution, developing a theoretical approach to the archaeological record that has been termed evolutionary processual archaeology. The contributions in this volume integrate positive elements of both evolutionary and processualist schools of thought. The approach, as explicated by the contributors in this work, offers novel insights into topics that include the emergence, stasis, collapse and extinction of cultural patterns, and development of social inequalities. Consequently, these contributions form a stepping off point for a significant new range of cultural evolutionary studies..

A Macroevolutionary Perspective on the Archaeological Record of North Americaocessing technologies in western North America and the expansion of bow-and-arrow technology across the continent are discussed. At the level of the complete RMS, this chapter focuses on the emergence and rapid expansion of the Missippian, an agrarian-based hierarchical system that dominated the Southeast from 950?cal B.P. until European contact.

Cultural Stasis and Change in Northern North America: A Macroevolutionary Perspectivestasis will be affected by the internal structure of resource management strategies and broader ecological and social selective context. We recognize that while adaptive specialization could be highly successful in the short term, adaptive flexibility likely offered greater long-term advantages for groups living in arctic contexts.

Macroevolutionary Theory and Archaeology: Is There a Big Picture?human behavior is acquired by social transmission and has payoffs that hinge on the result of social interaction, producing many different adaptive equilibria. Groups that make their way to superior equilibria are selected for, resulting in group selection, the pace of which is hastened by cultural transmission.
