描述This monograph contains papers which resulted from an international workshop on the effects of lithium on the hematopoietic and immunologic systems. The meeting was held at the John L. and Beatrice Keeshin International Biomedical Systems Planning Center of Rush University in Eagle River, Wisconsin from June 6 through June 9, 1979. The object of this conference was to bring together scientists from around the world with an interest in the effects of lithium and its potential use in human disease to bolster and stimulate the hematologic and immune systems. These topics seemed to us to be important and the time seemed right for bringing together the workers in these fields to exchange ideas and recent research results. We sought to bring together basic research scientists trying to uncover the mechanism of action of lithium in the stimulation of granulo- poiesis and in its immunologic effects, together with those involved in clinical care and the use of lithium as a therapeutic tool in neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders. Lithium Carbonate in Medicine and Psychiatry “l(fā)ithia” springs were bottled and widely used well into the 1900’s . the unsubstantiated hope that a wide range of medical ills could be cured or prevented. . the early twentieth century, the lithium salt of bromide was used both as a hypnotic and an anti-epileptic agent but this use faded as the use of bromides fell into disfavor.

Myelopoietic Modulation by Lithium: , Experiments on its Mechanisms of Action in Mand by chemotherapy in acute myeloid leukemia (Charron .., 1977). Lithium has also been used to elevate leukocytes, platelets and hemoglobin levels . aplastic anemia with some success (Barrett .., 1977).

Lithium Effects on Granulopoiesis in Mice Following Cytotoxic Chemotherapynick, 1975; Harker .., 1977). The present studies describe changes . hematopoiesis during daily administration of lithium chloride (Li) to normal mice and report enhanced recovery of granulopoiesis following administration of cytotoxic drugs.
