Thermodynamics of Liquid Surfaces,It is necessary to discuss the physics of liquid surfaces before describing lipid and protein monolayers at liquid surfaces. This treatment is presented merely as an introduction; for detailed analyses, the reader is referred to more advanced textbooks on this subject (Defay .., 1966; Adamson, 1982; Chattoraj and Birdi, 1984).

Adsorption of Monolayers on Solids (Langmuir-Blodgett Films),f the monolayer equal to the area of the plate dipped was deposited on the plate when the plate was withdrawn. Later (Blodgett, 1934, 1935), it was found that any number of layers could be deposited successively by repeated dippings; this later came to be known as the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method.

Kinetics of Adsorption and Desorption,rocess alone. On the other hand, the kinetics of desorption of the alcohol monolayer are related to quite a high energy barrier. The same holds true for polymers, although in this case conformation (kinetics of conformation changes) and molecular weight are added parameters.

Biopolymer (Protein) and Synthetic Polymer Monolayers,yday life, there exists a vast literature on the physical properties of biopolymers in solution. On the other hand, the interfacial properties of these biopolymers have not been investigated as extensively as they deserve to be.
