Fieldwork on Phonetics and Phonology,In Chapter 3 we talked about basic analysis of early data, especially in working out a phoneme inventory. This chapter extends these ideas to discuss phonetic fieldwork (particularly in acoustic phonetics) and gives some suggestions for research design for phonetic analysis.

Discourse, Pragmatics and Narrative Data,Field linguists are often told to rely on naturalistic data as much as elic-ited data. By this we usually think of recorded narratives. However, a comprehensive description of a language should be built not just on elicited data, but also other types of spontaneously produced speech. Narratives and discourse data are covered in this chapter.

Introduction,ld methods class, in the field there are many more skills needed than just data collection, and it may well be that linguistics is the least of the fieldworker’s worries. Therefore here I cover not only linguistic data recording, but also grant-writing procedures, ethics and living in the field.
