The composition, density and distribution of the zooplankton in Parakrama Samudratre, with . sp. contributing most. The character of the zooplankton in 1980 and its differences from that in 1979 are discussed in relation to flushing rates, dilution, food availability and size-selective predation.

Feeding studies with natural food particles on tropical species of planktonic rotiferss species was about 30 times larger by volume than the small.from Parakrama Samudra. These results are discussed in the light of experimental information of rotifer feeding on monospecific food available in the literature.

A contribution to the ecology of the fish fauna of the Parakrama Samudra Reservoirnal changes in the species composition and population structure of the fish fauna are discussed with regard to (a) discontinuous breeding activity and spawning migrations of species, (b) seasonal changes in habitat and resource availability and (c) predation effects by fish and fish-eating birds.

Some remarks on long-term and seasonal changes in the zooplankton of Parakrama Samudrae to low water levels following a catastrophic cyclone in 1978. Species composition seems to have returned to a stable condition after restoration of high water levels. Seasonal changes in composition and densities of plankton were not marked over a three-years sampling period.

The ecology of cormorants (genus ,)vely. The estimated mean daily fish consumption amounts to 696 kg fish fresh weight d.. Nutrient export by these birds can reach almost one third of the nutrient loss through the outflow. These three species are well separated ecologically, but cichlids are the predominant prey for all of them.
