描述This book highlights the multiplicity of American women’s writing related to liminality and hybridity from its beginnings to the contemporary moment. Often informed by notions of crossing, intersectionality, transition, and transformation, these concepts as they appear in American women’s writing contest as well as perpetuate exclusionary practices involving class, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, and sex, among other variables. The collection’s introduction, three unit introductions, fourteen individual essays, and afterward facilitate a process of encounters, engagements, and conversations within, between, among, and across the rich polyphony that constitutes the creative acts of American women writers. The contributors offer fresh perspectives on canonical writers as well as introduce readers to new authors. As a whole, the collection demonstrates American women’s writing is “threshold writing,” or writing that occupies a liminal, hybrid space that both delimits bordersand offers enticing openings..

“Sweet Cement”: Occasioning Bathsheba Bowers’s d femininity, poetry and prose. The author concludes . is useful in its anomaly as a record of a colonial American woman’s struggle to articulate a profound, idiosyncratic experience in a time and place where such experiences were not often given a voice.

Beyond “The Bars”: Lucy Terry Prince and the Margins of the Colonial Landscapea racially?mixed group of children and adults until it was written down over a hundred years later by two white male antiquarians. The poem owes its existence and transmission to several generations of a diverse group of villagers and to their desire to situate themselves inside the boundary separating culture from cruelty.

Inhabiting the Liminal: The Architecture of Single Life in Catharine Maria Sedgwick’s Fiction only subvert traditional views of “old maids” but also validate the lives and the public work of single women. Sedgwick’s six major novels share four characteristics that suggest Sedgwick’s fictional oeuvre depicts the liminal as a space from which she can contemplate the potentiality and possibility of single women within the space of nation.

Contesting Sentimentalism: Human–Animal Bonds and Boundaries in Grace Greenwood’s sentimentality, the author contends that Greenwood’s representation of human–animal bonds is often unrulier. . invites us to dig beyond the traditional understanding of camaraderie between humans and pets and instead contemplate the more radical—symbiotic and transformative—implications of human–animal bonds.

States of Exception and Arab American Women’s Poetry After 9/11: Liminality and Community in Suheir “sovereign.” As such, the poems also present viable alternatives to the “frames of war” (Butler) that shaped the aftermath of 9/11, providing important contributions to a rethinking of transnational ties, the concept of sovereignty, and questions of global responsibility.
