描述Prior to the modern age laughter raised passions and activated the body to sweat and shake. Derision was not distinguished from joy. Deceiving the senses by tricks or funny stories made all people laugh loudly, regardless of class. Johan Verberckmoes describes, in this innovating book, the hotchpotch of comic images and stories in ‘Flandes‘ during the rule of the Spanish Habsburgs, from 1500 to 1700. It challenges the Bakhtinian idea of a caesura in the history of laughter around 1600.

Entremets: Turning Bakhtin upside down,laughter. This entremets does not attempt to build any theory to bridge that gap, but gives some clues as to the direction in which future historical research on laughter could look to find firmer ground. On the other hand, these few comments may perhaps inspire other social scientists to take historical research on the comic more seriously.

Postscript: Hispanic Flemish Hotchpotch, humour and may be provoked by anger, tickling or sincere friendship. Yet, when focusing on the early modern period, my impression is that both were much more closely connected than we tend to think in retrospect. After all, it is presumably only since Romanticism that humour has been linked to ..
