Introduction,This book first describes the main types of slides in soil, their causes and consequences, and then briefly the theoretical basis for stability calculations and the required field and laboratory investigations. This part is intended as a preparation for and introduction to the methods of landslide stabilization described in chapter 6.

Main Causes of Landslides,As already explained in chapter 2, this book, without claiming completeness, deals primarily with landslides in stratified soils. With only a few exceptions, these are soils from the younger Tertiary; they are frequently marine sediments originating from the Sarmate (uppermost Miocene) and the Pont-Pannon (lowest Pliocene).

Methods for the Stabilization of Landslides,The case histories presented in this chapter were chosen to aid the designing engineer in the selection of the appropriate stabilization method. But as previously pointed out, there exists a wide variety of slide phenomena and ultimately each decision requires a high degree of courage and personal involvement.
