The aquatic vegetation of Lake Chadh are related to the continuing slow recession of water since 1968. Due to travelling difficulties in the marshy or recently dried zones, the last surveys were made only in the south basin, while only some aerial surveys of the north basin could be made.

The phytoplanktonaxons. The southeastern part of Lake Chad appeared to have the most varied flora with 787 taxons compared with 628 for the northern part and only 461 in the southern part, where the collections were less numerous than in the other parts (Table 1).

The zooplanktonwo unidentified Calanoids of secondary importance can be added to the list. The littoral forms of the Cladocera and Copepods, mostly attached to the vegetation were much more numerous (Dussart and Gras 1966; Rey and Saint-Jean 1968, and 1969).

The benthic fauna: ecology, biomass and communitieshis periphyton was far from negligible in Lake Chad where fringing vegetation and submerged water grasses were numerous. It was usually composed of different species to the benthos although some were occasionally found among the benthos when it was sampled close to plant clumps.
