描述According to platonists, entities such as numbers, sets,propositions and properties are abstract objects. But abstract objectslack causal powers and a location in space and time, so how could weever come to know of the existence of such impotent and remoteobjects? In .Knowledge, Cause, and Abstract Objects., Colin Cheynepresents the first systematic and detailed account of thisepistemological objection to the platonist doctrine that abstractobjects exist and can be known. Since mathematics has such a centralrole in the acquisition of scientific knowledge, he concentrates onmathematical platonism. He also concentrates on our knowledge of whatexists, and argues for a causal constraint on such existentialknowledge. Finally, he exposes the weaknesses of recent attempts byplatonists to account for our supposed platonic knowledge..This book will be of particular interest to researchers and advancedstudents of epistemology and of the philosophy of mathematics andscience. It will also be of interest to all philosophers with ageneral interest in metaphysics and ontology.

Beliefs and Causes, section, I consider the claim that many beliefs are uncaused and yet they can still constitute knowledge. If beliefs can be uncaused and if such uncaused beliefs can be items of knowledge, then both the strong causal condition: .and the weaker causal condition:
